I’m excited to share that today marks the sixth anniversary of NewMexicoKidsCAN – a milestone that signifies six years of unwavering dedication to improving New Mexico’s public education system.
As I reflect on our journey, I am proud to share with you the impactful accomplishments, both significant and small, that have driven us forward in our mission over the past year.
KEY ACHIEVEMENTS IN 2023
PASSAGE OF HOUSE BILL 481
With support from House Minority Leader, Ryan Lane and Senate President Pro Tempore, Mimi Stewart, during the 2023 legislative session, House Bill 481 became law. This policy allows school districts in New Mexico to adopt high-quality instructional materials aligned with the science of reading, ensuring that students across the state are equipped with the best resources available to learn to read.
NEW MEXICO RISING PODCAST
In 2023, we officially launched our New Mexico Rising Podcast to highlight the incredible leaders, educators and parents who are working to improve our education system. With two successful seasons, 20 episodes and over 2,000 streams, New Mexico Rising has become a platform to amplify inspiring stories and insights shaping the future of education in the Land of Enchantment.
In fact, just yesterday, Governor Lujan Grisham highlighted podcast guest, Bella Chandler in her State of the State address. Go Bella!
GROWING OUR NETWORK OF ADVOCATES
You may be sick of hearing it, but our work is impossible without your advocacy. In 2023, we expanded our community of advocates to over 1,700 dedicated individuals. These advocates used their voice to champion improved education in New Mexico and together with them we are creating a stronger collective voice for positive change.

PRIORITIZING LITERACY
We have been unabashed in our support for dramatically improving literacy in New Mexico and we know that cannot happen if teachers, parents and community leaders do not have the resources they need. That is why we introduced several essential resources in 2023, including our Literacy Action Center and Literacy Toolkit. These tools empower parents and advocates to actively support our children in their journey to becoming strong readers.
