Expectations and supports vary across districts, providing differing learning opportunities for New Mexico’s 330,000 students
Albuquerque, N.M. – On Tuesday, April 6, NewMexicoKidsCAN will release a new report, “Continuing to Learn” which summarizes the continuous learning plans of every school district and charter school across New Mexico. All school districts and charter schools are required to submit their continuous learning plan to the New Mexico Public Education Department by Wednesday, April 8 describing in detail their course of action to support student learning through the end of the academic year.
“During this unprecedented upheaval of New Mexico’s education system, communities are looking for decisive leadership from district and school leaders” said Amanda Aragon, executive director of the education advocacy non-profit NewMexicoKidsCAN. “New Mexico students deserve learning opportunities that are rigorous, flexible, and accessible. Plans for distance learning need to be clearly communicated to parents, families, and students so that they know exactly what to expect and are well prepared to meet new expectations outlined by their districts and schools.”
The report shows varied approaches to distance learning from districts and schools across New Mexico, with differing expectations for students. The report found that 21% of districts began implementing their continuous learning plan the week of April 6, while 18% will begin implementation on April 13. Information about the start of distance learning was unavailable for remaining 61% of school districts and charter schools. “Some districts and schools are already implementing strong instructional plans for their students that include daily check-ins, virtual engagement with teachers, and standards-aligned student work, while others are struggling to put together strong plans and communicate them to families,” observed Aragon in response to the report.
NewMexicoKidsCAN will continue to monitor and update district plans through the NMPED deadline on April 8th. Additionally, the organization will highlight strong plans and implementation in the coming weeks on the organization’s social media channels.
