In the wee hours of the morning, our literacy bill (HB 481), sponsored by Minority Leader Ryan Lane, passed the House of Representatives on a 44-15 vote! HB 481 incentivizes school districts to adopt instructional materials aligned with the science of reading and will ensure students across New Mexico receive research based reading instruction.

52% of New Mexico 4th graders score below basic in reading on NAEP. That means more than half of NM students do not have even a partial mastery of the reading skills required for their grade.
