TODAY, NEWMEXICOKIDSCAN CELEBRATES OUR FIRST ANNIVERSARY

It’s hard to believe, but it’s true: NewMexicoKidsCAN is celebrating our first anniversary today! The last 12 months advocating for New Mexico students has flown by—and it’s all possible because of committed community members like you.

To commemorate, we’re looking back on 10 impactful moments from our first year.

1
THREE, TWO, ONE… LAUNCH

On this day last year, we formally launched New MexicoKidsCAN by bringing together community leaders and legislators in Santa Fe.

2
RELEASE OF FIRST EVER STATE OF EDUCATION REPORT

Our first project was an easy-to-navigate report on all things New Mexico public education, including important data in graphs to print or share.

3
EMPOWERING ADVOCATES ACROSS NEW MEXICO

In 2018 we hosted advocacy trainings for over 200 parents, teachers and community members. Everyone deserves to have their voice heard and be empowered to speak up for students and families across New Mexico.

4
A STUDENTS FIRST PERSPECTIVE IN THE MEDIA

Our work and our voices have reached far and wide, featured in many news stories last year—from op-eds about the need to support our struggling schools and the potential of our students, to quotes about the next Secretary of Education and key facts about education.

5
POLICY WIN: RAISING THE BAR FOR EDUCATOR PREPARATION

We set out to ensure the New Mexico Public Education Department would release report cards for all the state’s teacher preparation programs. We are proud to say we accomplished this goal when the report cards went live this summer!

6
CELEBRATING NEW MEXICO’S BEST SCHOOLS

To shine a spotlight on schools with innovative practices and extraordinary results we launched our #MakingTheGrade campaign to highlight New Mexico’s 25 top performing schools.

7
UNVEILING A VISION FOR EDUCATION IN NEW MEXICO

As the framework for our policy work, we released The Future of Education in New Mexico, a roadmap to ensuring every New Mexico child receives an education that prepares them to achieve their dreams. This roadmap is designed to provide students, policymakers and advocates with a vision for positive, future-oriented change, focused on transparency, innovation, options and excellence.

8
EXPLORING THE AGE OF AGILITY

We partnered with friends at America Succeeds to host the Age of Agility Summit, and brought together more than 100 community members to discuss perspectives from leaders in business, education and policy. Our theme was “The Future of Work” and what it means for restructuring the way we deliver education.

9
INFORMING THE COMMUNITY

NewMexicoKidsCAN released a series of brief reports to help community members better understand major parts of New Mexico’s public education system, like: School Grades, teacher evaluation, PARCC and charter schools.

10
EXPANDING OUR VOICE TO VIDEO

Just last week, we tried a new approach to sharing our story: we had our first Facebook live! More than 6,000 people watched our video recap of recent executive orders and what they mean for students. We released another video this week!

We’ve accomplished so much together in just one year. Imagine what we can achieve in 2019 and beyond! You can help NewMexicoKidsCAN celebrate many more milestones through a tax-deductible gift in honor of our birthday.

A gift of any amount makes a difference. Make a gift today.

Thank you for your advocacy and support—and for the everyday gift of your commitment to all our children!

Amanda is the founding executive director of NewMexicoKidsCAN and an alumna of the 50CAN Education Advocacy Fellowship. She lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
